How does it feel to be celebrated for your achievements?Vallin Meukam: Receiving the Best Short Film Award at the NAVY Film Festival was an incredibly rewarding and inspiring experience for us at ILLUSION HOUSE. It is an honor to be recognized for our work and efforts as an animation and VFX studio. This award strengthens our confidence in our creative abilities and motivates us to continue our projects with even greater passion and determination.Fox Renderfarm: Could you give us a brief overview of the project that won you the ‘Best Short Film Award’ at the NAVY Film Festival?Journey of the Legend © Vallin MeukamVallin Meukam: Our short animated film illustrates the journey of the famous Cameroonian footballer Samuel Eto'o. We set out to depict his journey from his dream of becoming a legend, inspired by his idol Roger Milla, through the obstacles he encountered, to his achievements.Fox Renderfarm: What inspired you to create this short film about the kid pursuing his football dream?Vallin Meukam: We were impressed by the career of the footballer Samuel Eto'o, so we said to ourselves: "Why not make this in 3D animation?Fox Renderfarm: Why did you choose to model the film's protagonist after the iconic Samuel Eto'o Fils?Vallin Meukam: Samuel Eto'o is a world football legend. And because he's Cameroonian, we wanted to celebrate our legend.Fox Renderfarm: Can you walk us through the creative process behind your work, from conceptualization to final execution? Do you have a standard working pipeline? (It would be nice if you could add some pictures of your pipeline!)© Vallin MeukamVallin Meukam: We follow a standard pipeline for our work.In pre-production, we start with the idea, then draw up a script, design the characters, make the storyboard, and research or create references for the animation.In production, we go through sculpting, modeling, clothing design, texturing and shading, grooming, rigging, animation, clothing simulation, other simulations, layout, lighting, scene optimization, and rendering.In post-production, we carry out compositing, color grading, and finally audiovisual editing.Fox Renderfarm: The film’s music and sound effects play a crucial role. How did you select or create the soundtrack?Vallin Meukam: For the music and sound effects, I worked closely with a talented composer and sound designer, DANIEL EKO EKWE, to create an original score that matched the mood and tone of the film. We discussed in detail the emotion I wanted to convey through the music and the key themes of the story. The composer was able to capture these elements and transform them into an immersive and emotional soundtrack that enriched the visual experience of the film.Fox Renderfarm: How did you capture the emotional journey and resilience of the main character?Vallin Meukam: We captured the main character's emotional journey by immersing ourselves in his story, understanding his underlying motivations, and exploring his reactions to events. We also analysed his interactions with other characters, his dialogue and his actions to capture his emotions throughout the story.Fox Renderfarm: Can you elaborate on any challenges you encountered in designing and animating this short film? How did you address them?© Vallin MeukamVallin Meukam: The layout of the football stadium and scenes with a lot of detail, such as the city of Douala, was not easy to do because the Maya viewport became slow at one point. We therefore opted to use Arnold's.ASS files, which solved the problem. We also encountered difficulties in the crowd simulation process. At the start of our pipeline, the idea was that all the crowds would be created in Houdini, but we had problems importing the Houdini crowd simulations into Maya. In the end, all the crowd simulations were done in Maya using the MASH function. We encountered difficulties in the clothing simulation process because it was very tedious, but in the end, it was accomplished.Fox Renderfarm: Can you describe a particularly memorable moment or breakthrough in the project's development?Vallin Meukam: The most memorable moment in the making of Journey of the Legend is the scene in which the protagonist is small. The successful animation of this scene was crucial in determining the feasibility of the project. It was a kind of pilot phase that was crucial to the realization of our project.Fox Renderfarm: Are there any particular scenes in your work that you are particularly proud of or that viewers might overlook at first glance?Vallin Meukam: I'm particularly proud of the last scene where the protagonist returns at the starting point of the film and also finds a graffiti of his image on a wall next to Roger Milla's; this in fact shows that he is now sitting at the table of legends. That scene really moved me.Fox Renderfarm: Could you share your experience using Fox Renderfarm's cloud rendering services for your projects? Blender Sculpting Tutorial for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know
If you have ever tried to go into the Blender sculpting tab, either your mesh would not let you sculpt or your sculpting will looks basic, but in this Blender sculpting tutorial, Fox Renderfarm will take you through the process on how you can get started with sculpting and how you can use free brushes to boost your workflow and improve it.Why You Should Learn Blender Sculpting?Before we start, why should you learn Blender sculpting? One good reason to learn sculpting in Blender is to add awesome details to your mesh. Sculpting lets you easily add things like wrinkles, skin texture, and all sorts of small, realistic touches that would be a pain to do with regular modeling. You can even bake those details into maps and apply them to low-poly models, so they look super high-quality without adding too much geometry. It’s a great way to make your models stand out!How Sculpting WorksSculpting works by manipulating the vertices of your mesh, which are the points that make up the shape. When you increase the subdivisions of your mesh, you’re essentially adding more vertices, which gives you a much smoother surface to work with. The higher the subdivisions, the more detail you can add because you have more geometry to work with. This lets you push and pull the surface in finer ways.Basics of Sculpting in BlenderWhen you first start sculpting in Blender, the first thing you’ll notice is that your mesh doesn’t seem to let you sculpt on it. This happens because your mesh doesn’t have any subdivisions. Sculpting works by manipulating the geometry of the mesh, and with low subdivisions, there simply aren’t enough vertices to work with.You can fix this by adding more subdivisions, this will increase the number of vertices, allowing you to sculpt with greater detail.However, keep in mind that higher subdivisions require more processing power, and depending on your computer’s specs, it might slow things down or cause performance issues.SubdivisionsYou can subdivide your mesh manually in edit mode, but there’s also an easier way!Add the subdivision modifier in the modifier tab, set the modifier to "Simple", and increase the subdivision level. It’s important to apply this modifier before entering Sculpt Mode since it doesn't work while sculpting.However, there’s another modifier that’s perfect for sculpting, and that is the Multi Resolution Modifier. It works directly in Sculpt Mode. To use it, simply select your mesh, add the modifier, and click Simple Subdivision. You can adjust the subdivision levels separately for both the viewport and sculpt mode, which gives you more flexibility and control while sculpting. This is a great option when you want to maintain a balance between performance and detail.Dynamic TopologyIf you want to add micro details or sculpt on a mesh without manually subdividing it, Dynamic Topology is a lifesaver. This feature automatically subdivides your mesh only where you are sculpting. To enable it, simply check the "Dyntopo" box in the tool settings.From there, you can adjust the detail level (a low value for fine details, like skin or stitches).While Dynamic Topology can speed up your workflow, it does destroy your topology, so it’s important to remesh your model later on if you want to clean things up.Sculpting BrushesOne of the easiest ways to enhance your sculpting is by using brushes. Blender has a variety of brushes built in, but you can also download specialized brush packs to speed up your work. I personally use the GSculpt Library, which comes with over 400 brushes. Using brushes from other libraries is also similar.Just open the .blend file and append every brush, or you can append the ones you need.To start sculpting with a brush, simply select the one you want from the brush menu, adjust its strength (I usually set it to around 0.1 or 0.3), and adjust the radius with the "F" key. Each brush has its own settings, so don’t forget to experiment to find what works best for your needs.As you sculpt, you’ll often need to add small details like stitches or wrinkles. To do this, your mesh will need to be subdivided enough to handle these small details. If your mesh isn’t subdivided enough, you can either use the Multi-Resolution Modifier or enable Dynamic Topology for those small, micro details.Final Thoughts for Blender BeginnersI hope you found this quick, small guide helpful and that you’re ready to start sculpting in Blender!
